PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Grades 3, 4, and 5 receive three 45-minute periods of instruction each week from Mrs. Whitlock. The physical education program for grades K, 1, and 2 is provided by the classroom teacher on a regular weekly basis. The students receive instruction in:

motor development
(movement and rhythmic)
organized games
gymnastics
fitness
sports skills

PUPIL PROGRESS

Three scheduled reports of pupil progress are made to parents. The first is in the form of a conference at school in November; the second, in report form, is sent home in March; and the final report goes home in June.

If you have a special concern at home or about school, please do not hesitate to contact us at any time.

READING RECOVERY

Reading Recovery is an intensive reading program for first grade students. The program stresses early intervention and intense one-to-one instruction. Reading Recovery originated in New Zealand and is now being implemented all over the world. Students graduate from the program in 8 to 14 weeks. 85% of the students that have graduated read at or above grade level. Long-term studies show that this early success follows them throughout their school careers.

The Bellingham School District has made a commitment to the Reading Recovery program. Silver Beach will have two Reading Recovery teachers this year in an attempt to reach 20% of our first grade students.

SAFETY

Please take time to observe your child's safety habits. Every child should know these basic safety rules:

Cross streets only at crosswalks
Walk on sidewalks whenever possible
Walk facing traffic where there are no sidewalks
Do not accept rides with or talk to strangers
Go directly home after school
If a bicycle is ridden, the rules of the road should be carefully followed.
(We do not recommend bicycles for K-2 students.)

S.B.E.A. AND COMMUNITY INFORMATION

Silver Beach has an active parent group; S.B.E.A. (Silver Beach Education Association). It serves the children at school by providing room persons, parent tutors and volunteers. In addition, the S.B.E.A. sponsors special activities and projects to improve and enrich the climate at school.
