A note to Primary Teachers...

This year, the generic computer log-on for primary students gives them access to selected websites. Below are the websites that are available for your students with this log-on. This page is intended for your information as you plan. If you would like to have your students access one of these pages, your LMS can work with you to create a link that is accessible to your students. If you would like to add a site to this list, let your LMS know.


Literacy

Starfall--Lots of great activities to promote early literacy.

Rainforest Maths--A site from Australia with lots of good math activities.

Rainbow Fairies--Based on the popular books series, Rainbow Magic.

ABC Ya-Activities, by grade level, for a variety of subjects.

Book Adventure - This site helps students select books based on their reading level and areas of interest, and then offers comprehension quizzes.

Jan Brett - Lots of printable games and activities, as well as some online games and activities based on Jan Brett's books. A favorite online activity for primary kids is decorating a gingerbread house.

Read Write Think - This site from the International Reading Association and NCTE has lesson ideas and a variety of online student resources such as graphic organizers, letter/sound games, tools for creating book covers, etc.

Seussville-Have s0me fun with Dr. Seuss.

Peter Rabbit and Friends - Games and stories related to Beatrix Potter's Peter Rabbit. Click on Fun, then Storytime, to hear the stories read aloud.

Wired for Books - Find links to online audio books, including Peter Rabbit Stories, some Grimm fairy tales, and some Kipling Just So Stories.

Scholastic.com - Games and activities based on books published by Scholastic.

Magnetic Poetry - create poems with Magnetic Poetry online

Math

Illuminations from NCTM - Click on Activities to see some online math activities for students. Patch Tool, Five Frame and Ten Frame seem most appropriate for primary students.

National Library of Virtual Manipulatives - Many online math activities, organized by grade level and math strand. Excellent online manipulatives and teaching ideas.

Internet Math--Internet 4 You! Math activities, by grade level, to support your math program

Primary Math-Activities for math practice.

Make Five - A tic-tac-toe type game. Choose addition, subtraction or multiplication, then match problems to solutions to get five in a row.

AAA Math - Math activities sorted by subject and grade level. Plenty of facts practice!

MathGym - Mathematical games and puzzles, including Connect 4, Tetris, Mastermind, Battleships...

Educational Java Programs - Interactive activities to explore money, time pattern blocks, base 10 blocks (as well as base 2, base 5, base 8 blocks), etc.

Pongo.com - contains jokes and games for kids. There are some math games, as well as some with no educational value.

Winter Weather Glossary - from USA Today

Weather Wiz Kids - learn all about weather from a TV meterologist

Kids' Crossing - from the National Center for Atmospheric Research and UCAR - some great weather information, games and activities, pretty advanced reading level.

 

-Animals

BioKids - Kids' Inquiry of Diverse Species - The Critter Catalog is a great resource for research on different animal species. The site also includes field guides of tracks and signs, and invertebrates. All information is based on ecosystem in southeast Michigan.

ENature.com - Explore field guides for all sorts of plants and animals, identify animal tracks, or learn more about local birds.

Insecta Inspecta World - information and pictures of a variety of insects

Florida Panther Net - learn about Florida panthers.

The Wild Ones - Children's education program from The Wildlife Trust. Find out about bioscapes, wildlife species, etc.

Welcome to the Watery World of Whales - Learn about whales, view a photo gallery.

Whale Times - learn about whales and other sea mammals, explore a whale glossary, and play whale related games and activities.

Whale Watch - Listen to whale sounds and explore a whale photo gallery. Be sure to click on Kids' Stuff to find more whale information.

Zoobooks.com - Learn about animals in the online companion to Zoobooks magazine.

National Geographic - A great resource for primary research, particularly on animals. There are also videos on various science topics. Games and stories are more geared for intermediate students.

The Barred Owl - This ThinkQuest site was created by students, for students. A good resource for research on owls.

Emperor Penguins - Beautiful photos of emperor penguins, and one page of written information at an advanced reading level.

Bats: Why Should We Care? - Good resource for research about bats.

Bats 4 Kids - Another resource for research about bats.

Bat Quiz - an online quiz about bats

 

-Ecosystems

Nature Grids - from the Caterbury Environmental Education Center, the kids' pages let students explore various ecosystems through activities such as a virtual pond dip.

Foss Webs - Find photo galleries, videos, activities, Q&A, and links to relevant websites, all related to Foss modules.

Starchild-Young astronomers can learn things here!

Green Hour - from the National Wildlife Federation, this site promotes the idea of a "green hour" every day for kids - an hour of unstructured time to interact with nature. Click on Discovery Journal and Activities for activities and ideas that lend themselves to classroom use.

Environmental Protection Agency for Kids - Look for links to find out about endangered plants and animals, garbage and recycling, an interactive water cycle activity, etc.

EcoKids - This Canadian site provides environmental education resources for classrooms. Under "Homework Help" you will find resources for research on environmental issues. "Games and Activities" includes activities dealing with food chains, the water cycle, energy efficiency, land use, and more. Much of this site is more appropriate for intermediate students.

Discovery Education - This site requires a membership in order to have full access to the educational resources. It includes articles, videos, and interactive online activities in physical science, life science, and Earth and space science.

Museum of Science and Industry - Information about this Chicago museum, including some virtual exhibit tours.

World Wildlife Federation - Learn about wildlife and global warming

 

Social Studies

Culturegrams - Resource for research on countries and cultures

Cool Antarctica - facts, history and wonderful pictures of Antarctica.

Mexico for Kids - learn about the history, culture, and ecosystems of Mexico. Site may be viewed in English or in Spanish.

Kids Web Japan - learn about Japan's culture, folklore, language, and more.

VA Kids - Kids' page from the Department of Veterans' Affairs

Community Helpers  - Explore the roles of different members of a community.

Highlights Magazine Online-Just like the paper version there are lots of activities at this site.

Literacy and Numeracy--Site is designed for young children. Scroll down the page to find the actual activities.

Gamequarium - This site contains a list of games appropriate for various age levels. Includes phonics, ending sounds, words families, blends, rhymes, etc. Caution - Many of the games in the list link to other web sites, not hosted by Gamequarium. Test the games first! Not all will be on the primary allowed list!

Meddybumps - games, puzzles and online stories

ABC.net - Sites and resources based on ABC television children's programming.

PBS Kids - Sites and resources based on PBS television children's programming.

BBC/children - Many educational games and activities based on BBC children's programming. Find activities related to counting, telling time, health, sentence structure, adjectives and adverbs.

Kid Zone-Activity site arranged by subject and by grade level. Does have advertising and pop ups.

Fun with Spot - Activities based on Spot the Dog books. There is a matching game, a counting game, etc.

BillyBear for Kids - This site has some online games (addition, what's the same/different) and storybooks. Note - many popups and items to download!

Weekly Reader.com - A variety of games and puzzles (math, geography, crosswords, word searches), coloring pages, and opportunities to read/write letters to the editor.

Harcourt Learning Site - online activities related to math, reading, spelling, social studies, science, health and art.

Primary Resources - Online activities in many curricular areas. Note - some of these activities are for download, others are available online.

Sadlier Oxford - Online activities in a many curricular areas.

 

Reference

Worldbook Online - online encyclopedia

Biography.com - Brief biographies of over 25,000 people, arranged alphabetically and by category. Reading level is for intermediate aged students and older, but there are photos and animalographies (bios of famous animals) that might be useful for primary students.

Other

Play Safe, Be Safe - Games and activities for teaching fire safety. Some activities are for kids (dress the fire fighter, Keep Away card game), others are for teachers to use as a teaching tool (crawl low under smoke story board).

National Fire Protection Association - look under Learning for student fire safety activities.

McGruff - learn about fire safety with Fire Dog McGruff.

Puzzlemaker - Teachers and students can create puzzles to print - crosswords, word finds, etc.

Groundhog.org - The official site of the Punxsatawney Groundhog Club. Learn about the history of Groundhog Day, learn about the Punxsatawney celebration, and find some lesson ideas and student activities to print.

FEMA - Information about natural disasters from the Federal Emergency Management Association. There is a lot of info to read, but also photo galleries, online coloring books related to disaster drills, et.

ChessKid - learn to play chess

Make-a-Flake - cut a paper snowflake online.

National Kite Month - this site includes a "fun for kids" section, with information on how kites fly, safety, etc.

MooMilk - a dynamic adventure into the dairy industry

 

For Teachers

Discovery Education - This site has many resources for teachers (Kathy Schrock's guide for educators, for example), as well as Puzzlemaker, in which students can create crosswords, word searches, and other puzzles.

Kaboose - Holidays and Fun - This site has some good craft ideas and information about holidays. Looks like a good place for teachers to gather ideas, not necessarily a place for students to visit.

Internet Public Library-Great site for reference information with links to other content sites.

Kids Turn Central-Useful site for teachers looking for content related activities.

Education World - This educator's resource is designed to make the Internet more accessible to teachers. Find lesson plans, tech integration ideas, and professional development information.
