Logging With Horses and Oxen

Logging With Oxen

This photo was probably taken at the south end of Bellingham Bay. This shows a "skid road" over which the logs were dragged by the oxen. The "skids" were made of logs laid across the path. This kept the path from becoming too muddy and made the logs slide more easily.

The Grease Monkey

Horses supplied much of the power to drag logs through the woods. The man at the front of the picture is called the "grease monkey". It was his job to spread grease on the skids to make the logs glide more smoothly along the "skid road".

Horse Power!

You can bet that the horses in this picture were hungry at the end of the day!
