14th Street School

The 14th Street School, built in 1890, was the first public grade school built in Fairhaven. The building was taken down after the Lowell School building was completed. Today the site is the west playground at Lowell.

Whatcom High School

In 1903, a high school was built on Halleck Street. The original structure, as seen in the picture is still standing today at the corner of D Street and Halleck as part of Whatcom Middle School. An addition was built in 1916, enlarging the main building to the one which exists today.

Washington School

The original Washington School, built in 1891, was two stories high, made of brick and topped by a bell tower and spire. The school was closed in October, 1958 and demolished. Washington Square is presently on this site.

Larrabee School

The Larrabee Grammar School was built in late 1890 and was on the block bounded by 20th and 21st and Larrabee and Donovan avenues. The school, built at a cost of $40,000, was torn down around 1919.

Silver Beach School

This is the second Silver Beach School. It was built in the early 1900's. The first school was lost in "the great forest fire of 1894". The Daily Reveille, stated on July 9, 1895 that "The Silver Beach school house is nearly ready for occupancy and is a handsomer building than the old one". A brick building was built next to this one a short time later.

Sehome Grade School

This school was located in the 900 block between High and Indian Streets at Laurel St. It was built in 1890 at a cost of $11,200. It had six large classrooms. Today the site is known as Laurel Park.
