- "Esperanza Rising", by Pam Munoz Ryan--"Esperanza Rising"
is about a young girl that is rich and has maids working for her. One night her father goes out on a wagon ride
and is killed. Her uncle wants her mother to marry him, but she doesn't want to. The family sneaks out in a wagon
and boards a train to get away. They now must live a poor, third class life as slaves picking cotton and fruit.
Esperanza's mean friend wants the workers to go on strike for higher wages, but Esperanza fears she will lose her
job. Will they survive? Will her family lose their jobs? You can find out if you read this emotional book.

- "The Birchbark House", by Louise Erdrich--A historical fiction story
set in the 1840's. It is a realistic story of the lives and traditions of the Ojibwa tribe that lived near Lake
Superior. The story is about Omakayas, a seven year old girl. When she was a baby she was the only survivor of
a smallpox epidemic. When she is seven, the smallpox comes again and she is the only one who doesn't get the disease.
She learns to take care of people and discovers that helping others will be her job in life. A great story.

in the country on a farm. Her mother dies from a burning bucket. After her death, the girl and her father grow
far apart. Soon both of them miss each other and become better friends.
